Nearer 3.5 but Goodreads is a bit stingy with the marking system.
I'm a big fan of the Elvis Cole books and in the past 4 years have read the series through from the start. I think they peaked somewhere near the middle when the plots and character development where most balanced. Since then, and with Taken, Crais' focus is on plotting and hence the books lapse a little more into Hollywood style cliche.
Taken revolves around people smuggling and two young people falling into the wrong hands. This happens very quickly and we get straight into the chase. The plot involves Mexican cartels, Korean mafia and shady middle easterns but most of these characters are a little one dimensional and represent various shades of 'baddies'.
Crais is good on fast paced action and Cole and Pike more or less write themselves but I can't help wanting a little more depth in the vein of the LA Requiem, The Last Detective or Chasing Darkness.
