Wow! This was an amazing book. The primary story line surrounds Yasuko Hanaoka, a divorced mother and Ishigami her next door neighbor and math teacher. Yasuko's abusive ex-husband tracks her and her daughter down and tries to extort them for money. Tragically, the evening ends in violence. Suddenly, Ishigami, Yasuko's quiet next door neighbor, whom she has rarely spoken with, shows up offering salvation and a way out for Yasuko and her daughter, Misato. If you just follow the obvious plot line of Ishigami trying to outwit the police (Det. Kusanagi) and physics Professor Manabu Yakaw, you have fallen into Keigo Higashino's trap.
There is a mathematical conundrum: P=NP, which "asks whether it is more difficult to think of the solution to a problem yourself or to ascertain if someone else’s answer to the same problem is correct". This is what "The Devotion of Suspect X" is all about and the ending is an amazing and beautiful twist. This is not an action packed, thrill ride mystery but I couldn't put the book down. I was drawn in by each page and pulled right along down the rabbit hole.
