(MILD SPOILERS) The story is of one very humble and good warden, who watches over 12 destitute old men benefiting from an old endowment of money. It is argued that the wardenship is nothing more than a sinecure. This is very disturbing to the warden who does not want to proves he's right so much as be right in the notion that his very great salary is rightfully his. Mild chaos erupts and in the end everyone is worse off, proving that if it ain't broke don't fix it.
The writing is flawless but the plot is very slow. It's sort of like watching Telly-tubbies - you keep watching because you are sure that any second something is going to happen, but nothing does. Really, what I've written above is the summary. You are nearly as knowledgeable about the plot not as you would be should you read the book. I'm told by others that this book is necessary to understand the series and that the series is a vast deal better. It wasn't a terrible read, just a dull one.
