Crash approaches life directly and with a muscle-bound confidence, on and off the football field.

He isn't sure what to make of his earnest and un-hip neighbor, but when he meets another jock similar to himself, they make bullying that neighbor (Penn) a consistent side project.

When a core part of Crash's life is turned upside down, he finds himself reexamining his priorities.

In this book, everything and everyone changes gradually (except, perhaps, Penn and his parents). Crash's backyard becomes almost a metaphor for his own development as a person.

Side note: I loved Abby, Crash's little sister. She is basically Marty McGuire from Kate Messner's book, but older and with the challenge of parents she must educate about the wonders of nature. She would have loved Messner's books in 2nd grade...

I adore Jerry Spinelli's storytelling; this was an excellent book.
