Home: A Memoir of My Early Years by Julie Andrews Edwards
I brought this home from the library because I've always had a twisted fascination with Julie Andrews, who to me is an interesting combination of icky wholesomeness (her screen persona) and refreshing bawdiness (her real self). Those personality traits are evident in every chapter of this really interesting autobiography. But one has to care about showbiz behind-the-scenes to read it; otherwise, you probably shouldn't bother. On the other hand, Andrews' revelations about her personal life and childhood are really fascinating and often surprising.
This account of her life goes up only to Julie Andrews' introduction to Hollywood and is mostly about her career on Broadway and, before that, as a young singer working her way through the English music-hall scene. My only disappointment is that I hoped to read about any sort of rivalry between the teenage Julie Andrews and the young Petula Clark, who was also a singing child star.
