A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity
by Bill O'Reilly
by Bill O'Reilly
Writing a review for a Bill O'Reilly book almost seems like a moot point. The man is such a controversial figure, if you don't like his views, you won't like the book. If you're an O'Reilly fan, you'll be in the Amen Choir of readers.
This book is Mr. O'Reilly's story of how he developed the thoughts and beliefs he now holds. He delves into his childhood, upbringing, schooling and the influences in his life that guided his thought and moral formation. With limited prior exposure to his views, I read his book with a neutral opinion of him. Some of his ideology I agree with, some I don't. I can see where his manner of communication is off-putting and yet is probably the very essence of his success-- love him or hate him, people are watching him and talk about him. He makes money.
It appeared, at least based on this book, he is a man of integrity who truly believes in standing up for his definitions of right and wrong and is coming from a place of wanting to live a life of honesty and justice. This quality made the book readable, thought-provoking and, except a few chunks I had to skim, enjoyable.
While I'm not generally a celebrity follower, I have read a few memoirs written by famous voices: Steve Martin, Carol Burnett, Betty White, Andy Rooney and now Bill O'Reilly. (I'm reading one by Dick Van Dyke now. Stay tuned.) It's always good to remember that being a dynamic personality or orator in life, doesn't necessarily make one a great writer. O'Reilly's book was no exception to this caveat.
