Good enough for me to consider the sequels. I learned considerably more than I ever thought I wanted to know about large oil tanker operations, and while it was a focus I wasn't expecting, it really added to the feel and overall tone of the book.
Contrary to what the short description might lead you to believe, this isn't an "anti-God" book at all, though it does play with stereotypes of many sides of that issue.
Without giving too much away, the only problems I had with the story were the portrayals of the atheists (even typing that makes me giggle a little) and the rather dark passage in the middle (it felt forced and unnecessary to me). Otherwise, there's a lot to like.
I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys semi-absurdist fiction like Douglas Adams -- it takes an amazingly strange concept and drops real people in to deal with the aftermath.
