I've seen people compare this to Saramago's "Blindness." I think that's a pretty accurate way to describe it. "Flame Alphabet" is very dark, deals with extremely uncomfortable aspects of human nature, and exists in a tight, purposely misleading maze of symbolism. Technically, it's absolutely superb. Fantastic prose. But readers looking for a quick thriller will be disappointed, because the horror here is existential in nature and it is by no means light reading. That said, I read it in two sittings. You'll see this in college seminars within five years.
