This is a book I remember from childhood but read again every couple of years for sheer pleasure. Set in a Sussex countryside that has all but disappeared, it tells of Martin, who must win the loyalty of six milkmaids who guard their love-sick mistress. He tells stories that win the milkmaids to his side, so that he can then woo the girl they've been hiding from him. Farjeon's language is lyrical and witty, and the stories are six little gems of the fairytale genre. For a child who loves reading, this book is a must. For an adult who's still fond of fairy tales, it's equally good.

Kay My pleasure - it's an absolute gem, a book that I would love to have written!

Charles Me too. And I love the drawings in my edition, by Ardizzone...

Kay Ah, it is my unshaken belief that the Brock illustrations are the best, but I think we all love whichever version lands in our hands - not so?

Charles I've never seen the Brock ones (but, yes, you're right...)

Kay 1927 hardback version - it cost me a damn fortune, but worth every damn penny!

Charles Well, I take it back. The illustrator of my copy (1952) of MP in the Apple Orchard wasn't Edward Ardizzone (who did, however, do my The Old Nurse's Stocking Basket), but Richard Kennedy. MP in the Daisy Field, on the other hand, was illustrated by Isobel and John Morton-Sale and the only other Farjeon book I have, The Singing Bells, has illustrations by Peggy Fortnum. They're all remarkably similar in style, which makes me wonder how much control Farjeon had over her books. I'll try and photograph a few and post them on Facebook...

Kay That would be lovely - maybe I'll try the same with the Brock ...

Melanie This book is so wonderful! I've just read and reviewed it for Valentine's Day, since it is so Romantic.
