** spoiler alert ** Garth Nix writes a great sci fic teen novel about Khemri, who has been chosen to become a Prince of the Empire. He has been augmented mechanically, biologically and mentally so that he is hardly human, and is being trained in a range of skills that may make him suitable to become the next Emperor. The only catch is that there are millions of other Princes, who must be defeated first and each of those are also trying to take the Empire. On one of his training exercises, he is sent to a fringe world as an unaugmented human and here he is forced to confront his human side. He falls in love, finds respect for other mere humans, and is shown a universe where his Empire ruthlessly engineers the deaths of whole worlds to suit its plans of conquest.

A fun and compelling read, which surely must be the first in a series (I hope)
