Ah, the pleasure it is to finally being able to write this review. So, where to begin? Let's be honest, I found this book to be downright painful. I think my main problem with it was the writing. I still can't pinpoint what exactly it was about the style, but it was a complete turn off. It seemed as if McLain was trying to write too eloquently and fell short, allowing thought processes to stop before they even started and kept me thinking, 'So what?' or "And? What then?". Next: the characters. Not a single one of them is likeable, even redeemable in any which way. Hemingway proves to be the most unpleasant, arrogant, horrid man. I know he wrote good books, but if this a true reflection of what he was like (which I can hope - and believe - McLain researched and therefore, got right)I couldn't wait for his demise. Hadley as a narrator proves a foolish protagonist and, though she spends most of the novel striving to be a stronger, more independent individual, she fails miserably and is clearly blinded by what she believes is love. Pauline...oh Pauline. Well crafted, but again, couldn't stand her. She was a cruel woman. I guess I should give McLain that - she did succeed in making me dislike all of the people in this book and, if this serves as an accurate portrayal of these people, then they were all sad and atrocious. However, I still can't say I enjoyed the book. I kept constantly flipping to the end, staring at the page count and calculating how much I had left to read.
