Rick's review
Beautiful Children: A Novel by Charles Bock
It took me awhile to get into the disjunctive flow of this book but soon found myself fully engrossed in the disparate lives of the many sad characters.
This is an extremely well written novel and I applaud the author for turns of phrase that I have never encountered before; there is a modern sharpness to his writing with edgy metaphors that encompass the Zeitgeist of 21st century Vegas. I am unfamiliar with this author's work but expect to hear more about him in the future if he continues to write with such aplomb.
That said, I was HIGHLY disappointed by the denouement of the novel. I feel Mr. Bock copped out on the ending because he couldn't think of an adequate reason for Newell's disappearance. Something more substantiative would have been much more preferable. I therefore feel let down.
