"To build up a library is to create a life. It's never just a random collections of books."
To be honest I have never ever thinking of something like that. Prior reading this book, as a book lover I just buy and read books that interest me or recommended by fellow readers. Dominguez provides a different insight to the literary world, that books can turn into something more than just a book. Just as human, books possess a life on it's own too.
Reading this book is like consulting a doctor, letting him (Dominguez) to diagnose my physical complaints. And based on the prognosis, I am one of those so-called Common Readers. I spied on friends' libraries, hoping to find books that I want to read but do not have, or simply knowing books that they devoured. Capable of spending a considerable amount of money for books but concerned only to study and understand them.
And it's inevitable to mention the Collectors. Their ultimate aim is to amass rare editions even though they never open them except to look at the pages, in the same way for example, people contemplate a beautiful object, a rare piece. This type reminds me to antique collectors who dare to spend a lot of money or to travel around the world looking for one Victorian piece.
However it did not end there. As Common Readers can step a little further to be a Bibliophile or Collector, of course it depends on the occasion and their desires, mentally book lovers can also turn into a Compulsive Reader. They spend all the money to buy books, or to do anything to provide space for the books - sells the car so the garage can accommodate the books for example. It is unbearable for them to put two authors who had quarrelled on the same shelf, or to build a house of paper, literally, book by book to replace the bricks.

Kalimat itu sederhana tapi jujur tidak pernah terpikirkan sebelumnya olehku. Sebelum membaca buku ini, sebagai pecinta
buku biasanya aku membeli dan membaca buku-buku yang menurutku menarik atau yang direkomendasikan oleh teman-teman. Namun lewat buku ini Dominguez menunjukkan pemikiran lain tentang dunia literatur, bahwa buku bisa melebihi eksistensinya sebagai buku, memiliki kehidupannya sendiri layaknya manusia pembacanya.
Saat membaca buku ini rasanya seperti sedang konsultasi dengan seorang dokter dan mengajukan beberapa keluhan fisik sehingga sang dokter bisa mendiagnosa penyakitnya. Dan berdasarkan hasil prognosis dr. Dominguez, aku ternyata masuk ke dalam kategori Common Readers. Ciri utamanya adalah selalu mengintip koleksi buku teman-temannya dengan harapan menemukan buku yang ingin dibaca tapi belum punya, atau hanya sekedar melihat jenis buku apa yang menarik perhatian orang tersebut. Namun belakangan aku juga berusaha mewujudkan mimpi untuk masuk ke dalam golongan kedua, Bibliophile. Golongan ini tentu saja juga pecinta buku yang sepanjang hidupnya mencurahkan segala upaya membentuk perpustakaan penting, bersedia menghabiskan banyak dana untuk buku namun tujuan utamanya adalah untuk mempelajari dan memahami isi buku tersebut.
Rasanya sulit ketika membicarakan pecinta buku tanpa menyebutkan golongan ketiga, Collectors. Tujuan utama golongan ini adalah mengkoleksi dalam jumlah besar edisi-edisi langka walaupun mereka tidak pernah membuka buku-buku tersebut selain sekedar melihat, dengan cara yang sama misalnya orang memandang benda indah yang langka. Golongan ini mengingatkanku pada kolektor benda antik yang rela menghabiskan banyak uang dan berkeliling dunia hanya untuk mencari barang-barang dari era Victoria.
Jika Common Readers sepertiku punya mimpi untuk melangkah maju menjadi seorang Bibliophile atau Collector, tentunya itu bisa walau tergantung pada situasi serta keinginan masing-masing individu, atau malah masuk ke dalam golongan ketiga yakni Compulsive Reader. Sama halnya dengan para pecinta buku lainnya, golongan ini bisa juga menghabiskan banyak uang namun sama sekali tidak ada batasan budjet bahkan mungkin satu-satunya pengeluaran mereka ditujukan untuk buku.
Mereka juga rela melakukan apa saja untuk menyediakan tempat bagi buku-buku koleksinya, termasuk menjual mobil sehingga garasinya berubah fungsi menjadi perpustakaan. Para Compulsive Reader ini tidak akan pernah membiarkan dua penulis yang pernah berseteru untuk menempati rak buku yang sama, dengan alasan apapun, atau membangun sebuah rumah kertas (buku) di mana satu per satu buku dijadikan pengganti batu bata....less
