I loved Operating Instructions. It was my go-to book when I had my son and I read it amazed at her honesty and her love for her son. This book is good but its nothing like Operating Instructions. Its supposed to be about Jax, her grandson, but really its not-- its about her life the first year of her grandson's life in this way the book is part spiritual-quest, part travelogue and a mix of reflections on her son being a young father, his relationship with his wife, but seldom is it truly a reflection on grandmotherhood, at least not enough to merit what the book is purportedly about. Essentially I liked it because I like Anne Lamott, but it was ultimately a touch disappointing. Almost like an editor told her, "this is what we're doing-- it will make a great deal of money," and her reluctance to go along with it show in the work.
