** spoiler alert ** When her mother is hospitalized after being severely beaten by her husband, Carley Connors' stepfather, Carley is sent to a foster home. Despite her anger at being placed there, she finds herself drawn to the family of three boys and touched by the kindness of Julie Murphy, the woman who tries to help her. She finds a friend at school and gives his just desserts to a bully who bothers the younger boys. Although she still loves her mother, she can't forget how she held Carley when Dennis, the stepfather, was trying to punish her. As her mother heals, Carley is torn between loyalty to her birth mother and her foster family. As she and her mother prepare to head back to Las Vegas, readers will surely root for their survival and hope for the best. Although I knew that Carley couldn't stay with the Murphys, I also found myself worrying about her future. What will keep her mother from ending up with another abusive man such as Dennis? How can the weeks she spent with the Murphys and learned to love and be loved be enough to sustain her through the tough times that are likely to come? Yes, the story ends on a hopeful note, but it also ends on an uncertain one with all sorts of pitfalls ahead for Carley and her mother. How easy it is to slip back into unhealthy behaviors!
