Marquez portrays beautifully the viciousness of history when one forgets the mistakes committed and learns not from them."A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within." History conquers the town of Macondo and the people who founded it just as fierce tides can overrun the most impenetrable of the mangroves.

A book of one reality as seen, lived by all but defined by individual experiences infused with magic that is ubiquitous through the narrative.
