I had the opposite experience from past reading of this author.
Ordinarily, I am drawn in immediately, read quickly till the end, and sometimes think it could have been deeper all in all. This book took me awhile to join, then touched me to my core. The vivid portrayal of this mother-daughter team, up against both unusual and universal challenges, captured my own imagination. The "fantastic" parts were written so tightly they only heightened the realism of the quadriplegic mother and coming-of-age daughter in the Mississippi summer of 1964.
