This is the twelfth novel from ‘The Women of the Otherworld’, and the second novel featuring Savannah Levine, the young spellcaster and private detective. Her best friend and faithful sidekick, Adam Vasik (exsustio half-demon) is there, too.
‘Spellbound’ picks up where ‘Waking the Witch’ left off, with a twist. Spending the night in a motel room, Savannah is dwelling on the previous events, on deaths she feels responsible for. She even wishes to give up her spellcasting power if some recent event could be reversed. Someone must have been reading her thoughts as she wakes ups the next morning to find herself……. powerless.
In this rollercoaster ride we follow Savannah on a learning curve. Has a demon stolen her power? Has a witch-hunter poisoned her again? Or is some powerful entity teaching her a lesson? Savannah has to face her fear of losing the most important people in her lives. In the meantime, she is kidnapped (for the third time in the 21 years of her life) by the Supernatural Liberation Movement, a group of rebel supernaturals who want to rule the world.
‘Spellbound’ also dwells on Savannah’s relationship with the Nast cabal, as her dead father was a sorcerer from this powerful family. Her half-brother Sean is the only one acknowledging her blood connection. But things are about to change for her half-brother Bryce, and everyone else. ‘Spellbound’ is only the first step of a brewing war where Savannah could have a very important role.
Kelley Armstrong writes with dry humour and twisted wits, making you crave for more.
More should actually arrive in July 2012 as the grand series finale, ‘Thirteen’, who promises to unite “Savannah with Adam, Paige, Lucas, Jaime, Hope and other lost-but-not-forgotten characters in one epic battle.”
