People have said that this book to openly admired Kennan without being critical when it was justified. This seems to me an unfair assessment. Gaddis clearly and openly discusses many of Kennan's issues and personal failings while also giving a detailed chronicle of the ways that he impacted and wished he had impacted US policy during the cold war. A good and eminently readable discussion of many of the both successes and failures of US policy in this period.
