This is the first book I've read in verse (that I can remember), and while it took me several pages to get used to--in rhythm with--I highly enjoyed it. Though perhaps saying "highly enjoyed" isn't quit right because the subject matter isn't "enjoyable", but the story was told well and convincingly, even though some very horrible things are brought into play. Several heavy themes lace this first person story told in snippets--or glimpses--of verse through the eyes, mind, and heart of a 12 year old girl: death of a parent, attempted suicide of a sibling, absolutely putrid mothering (I don't want to give too much away, but let's just say Carol did an amazing job at making me want to scratch the face off of the mother of the main character). So, masterfully told and a surprisingly quick read even though it is a little chunk of a book.
