I picked up "The Ranger" for the sole purpose of learning about the new author taking over Robert Parker's Spenser series, Ace Atkins. To be honest, I did not see many similarities with Parker and Atkins, and it is very apparent that Atkins has his own style. Based on reading "The Ranger", that's a good thing. Quinn Colson, a decorated Army Ranger, returns to his home in a small Mississippi town to attend his uncle's funeral. The death was considered a homicide, so Colson, through an attractive female sheriff, searches for the killer. They unearth a long standing coalition of corruption and greed that could destroy the town. A slave to this is a young lady who comes from nothing, gives birth, and is raised within the evil of the antagonists. This really seems to be the opening of a new series, and I look forward to reading more.
