An exciting coming of age story set in Florence towards the end of the Second World War, with 13 year old Paolo as the eponymous hero. Bored with the fear and constraints of living under German occupation, he defies curfew by sneaking out at night to cycle on the roads around Florence, imagining death defying escapades, when he becomes embroiled in events which could drag him and his family into terrifying danger. His father has vanished, presumed by everyone to be a member of the resisting Partisans; his English mother, aware of their precarious position between the deeply suspicious Gestapo and the desperate Partisans, is performing a delicate balancing act to keep her family safe; his sister Constanza, friendly with collaborators of the Germans, has plans of her own...
