The Road by Cormac McCarthy
This book was odd for me: it was a pretty quick read, but still poetic with a lot of powerful language. I also really enjoyed reading it, but am not particularly interested in reading the author's other books. I also found myself saying something along the lines of, "Well, the cannibalism scenes are shocking and crazy, but the FOCUS of the book is the relationship between the father and his son." The gore in the book was odd in that it wasn't for shock value (although those scenes certainly stick in your mind).
I don't have a lot of experience with Cormac McCarthy, other than reading this and watching No Country for Old Men, but he seems to have an affinity for settings where humanity is driven by basic greed, selfishness, and survival, while introducing main characters that go against this backdrop with a strong moral code.
