Benkler breaks down motivation into three separate reward types: monetary rewards, instrinsic-hedonistic rewards, and social-psychological rewards. In some cases a monetary reward could be inversely related to social-psychological satisfaction. For example (Benkler’s example), a friend who invites you to dinner might be offended if you tried to pay him/her.
