This book was a little too cheesy for me. Example: The protagonists have to spend a big portion of the book trying to fill in missing blanks from important instructions left for their community because the girl's baby sister got to the paper first and chewed it up, leaving only a scattering of partial words and letters. Kind of a ridiculous plot device. I've read a lot of children's books with great writing, but this felt like it was "written down." On the other hand, I had several middle-grade students who saw me reading this book tell me it was the "best ever," so apparently DuPrau was effective in connecting with her target audience.
