Although this book is, in my opinion, the weakest of the three "11 Birthdays" books, it is still a well-written story that kids will enjoy. And the protagonist, Rory Swenson, is so appealing and likable, that the character herself is just about enough to carry a book. Like many of Mass' books, it is a little slow to start as she settles in with her characters. This time the action focuses on Rory, who has finally turned 12 and can now do all the things she's longed to do (get a cell phone, babysit, have an IM name, etc.). The story - what there is of it - shows Rory learning that some of the things she's wished so hard for just aren't all she thought they were, while her own kind and giving nature is revealed. This trilogy is sure to be a hit, and I will recommend it heartily to readers in 4th-5th. Would also be good for older students up to 6th who are looking for a "gentler" read. And let's say "Woot woot" for Mass and the way she shows great (they don't seem over protective to me!) parents. I also love the way Mass leaves blanks between the books for readers to "fill in" on their own. Filling in the Rory and Jake Harrison story between the end of Finally and the beginning of Thirteen would be a great exercise in writing fan fiction....
