I thoroughly enjoyed this book about a traditional Japanese monk, raised from a young boy in a mountain monastery where he concentrated on the esthetics of calligraphy and the discipline of a spiritual life. When at age forty his superiors decide he is to go to Brooklyn and direct the building of a new Buddhist temple he is completely unprepared for the irreverent New York congregation. Confronted with the brash and seemingly vulgar Americans he is forced to confront the limitations of his spiritual depth.
