Kelly's review
The Dying Animal by Philip Roth
Why would I care for an aging semi-famous professor with a habit of having affairs with his students and quite elegantly defends his actions? Because this book is about a man who has never known what love is and is struggling to understand the overwhelming feelings he finds himself experiencing when he seduces a new student. This book is sexy and bold and heartfelt and thoughtful. A man who thinks he is solitary finds out how much he actually needs to connect- and when he does he thinks that it is wrong. His best friend George understands him and worries about his feelings for this new woman. The writing is suberb and the scene when the professor goes over to George's house is very powerful. I read the book in two days. it is a very short book, but also very thought provoking. The Dying Animal is an old man's old ways and the beginning of a very powerful new love.
