It took me so long to get around to finishing reading this compilation because the damn book is so cumbersome. These Absolute volumes look amazing, but they are an incredible pain in the ass to read.
Once upon a time, A Season of Mists was my favorite Sandman storyline and A Game of You was my least favorite. Returning to them as a much older man, I find that they have converged around a happy medium. They are both still fantastic, literally and qualitatively, but some of the glimmer is gone. They spoke to me more as a young man than they do to me now. My mild disappointment probably stims from the effect of coming to the work with the weight of expectation rather than the free thrill of discovery. If only we could experience our favorite works for the first time, over and over again.
