Power relationships are at the basis of our existence and Foucault aptly traces the history of these relationships from past to near-present. These controlling power relationships used to focus on physicality (control of the body), but over time the penal system began to focus on control over the soul. Foucault, with his usual intellectual acumen, produces one of the great works on the system of punishment. Along with Scarry's "The Body in Pain," Foucault's work is in the upper echelon of texts about the confluence between power, psychology, and society.
