I absolutely loved this!

When we first meet Maggie, she is nine, living in Brooklyn with her firefighter father (though, no longer on active duty because of an accident), older brother and stay at home mother. Maggie, like most of Brooklyn, is a HUGE Dodgers fan. While she doesn't play, she never misses a game broadcast (she prefers radio to TV). Perhaps her favorite place to catch a game is down at the firehouse, with her dad's old colleagues and the house dog. When a new guy joins the force (a Giants fan no less), Maggie's not too sure. But, Jim wins her over by teaching her to score a game. Then, before that year's season is even over, Jim is drafted and sent to Korea.

While this novel is primarily about a little girl's love of baseball, friendship, trauma and the Korean War, have a major impact. I love the way this is structured, because readers will learn about the war and its effects, but in a less brutal manner.
