It's hard not to compare this book to Carolyn Jessop's Escape. Both tell the story of life in the polygamous world of the FLDS. But although there are similarities in the two stories, they are distinct. Together, they give a pretty complete picture of this strange and hidden world.
Jessop was the second wife of an older and powerful FLDS man, whereas Wall was the child bride of a cousin who was only a few years older. By the time Jessop made her escape, she had eight children, the last one an infant with special medical needs. Her story gives a detailed look at the stresses of being in a plural marriage and the difficulty of escaping when faced with a powerful husband and few relatives to look to for support.
By contrast, Wall was the single wife of a young and relatively powerless husband, and had sisters and brothers who had already broken from the sect. So her story is more focused on her experiences as a child forced into a marriage with someone she detested. While Wall's b...more
