I liked the idea of this story, but I didn't think the magic elements were explained well. There were too many layers to it, and since both Latin and French terms were thrown around, it got a little too confusing. I gave up trying to puzzle it out and decided getting the gist of it was good enough. There is a little too much swearing, use of alcohol, and sniffing of bleach (!) to make this a good read for the younger set, but 12-13 year olds might enjoy it.
