Young Katherine has been sent to her Uncle Tully's estate by her guardian, her Aunt Alice, to find out what has been going on, but more importantly, to have her Uncle Tully committed to an asylum so that Aunt Alice can secure his fortune. Katherine goes to Stranwyne and finds not only a gothic mansion complete with strange noises and hidden passages, but also that her Uncle Tully has erected a gasworks and two villages for all of the workers employed on the estate. It seems everyone she meets has a motive and as Katherine gets to the heart of what's been happening at Stranwyne, her very life is in jeopardy. It's not very scary, but there is a little creepiness playing about the edges. Recommended.

Sylvia Dixon I think the ending leaves an opening for a sequel. I also liked the tone of the book.

Laura KJ The sequel was purchased along with this book. It is in the works.
