Applehearted's review
The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosinski
This is one of my favorite works of all time. It is horrifying, difficult and that sort of disturbing that gives you vertigo. It is also immensely beautiful. I think it makes the reader face the brutal nature of life without allowing them to blink or look away. It grabs you by the collar and says "you MUST see this, you MUST be a witness" because those living it could not turn away, could not shut the cover because it was too difficult to face.
The controversy around the book only seems to give it more weight. It is a work of genius no matter who penned it.
