This book took me quite some time to get through. I have read Philippa Gregory's other books, and though they are not always factually correct, and most often read like gossip mags, I have come to enjoy them and expect that of her books. This was so long and drawn out, and not at all enjoyable. It is written from the viewpoint of Mary Queen of Scots and her two jailers, but you are never engaged with any of the three main characters. Gregory simply twists and repeats the same sentiments for each chapter. I had to force myself to finish it. No new revelations, or interesting facts are ever revealed. It was like walking through mud.

Amy This is a great description of this book.

Vivienne I feel that Gregory was trying to write in a more serious and historically accurate style having received so much flack for her books reading as you say like gossip mags.

She's not a historian to uncover new evidence (even if possible) and in sticking to the sources she has there was unlikely to be little in the way of new revelations to those versed in MQS's life and events around her imprisonment.

Right, but repeating the same ideas and story for every single chapter does not really make a good book. She should stick to what she does well.

Vivienne I agree and she certainly loosened up for 'The White Queen', which has the same energy as her other works.

If you haven't tackled that one yet I would recommend.

I have the White Queen right now, and will read that one in about week.

D'Anna Diana's review is spot on. This book dragged and slogged through the English mud. The tedium got to me. I understand that much of this is reflective of Mary's imprisonment, but I still need more depth.
