The Long Earth

by Terry Pratchett, Stephen Baxter
When I first heard that Terry Pratchett was going to be writing a science fiction novel with Stephen Baxter, I was so excited. It has been many years since Terry Pratchett has written science fiction. He is well known as the author of the intensely fun comic fantasy series, Discworld, but he hasn't published a science fiction novel since the 80s.
Needless to say I was beyond excited when I received a review copy of The Long Earth.
I've read every single novel that Terry Pratchett has published, and I've never read a novel by Stephen Baxter so I was a little nervous going into The Long Earth. However, those nerves disappeared within a few pages.
The Long Earth is set a few years in the future. An inventor called Willis Linsay has invented a stepper, a device that enables you to step from one earth to another. As the population discovers these alternates earth, both east and west, the world changes forever. How many earths are there and what will the human population find out there?
The Long Earth is beyond fantastic. For me, it was a total new concept, and I loved every single page of it.
Of all the characters, I related the best to Joshua, a natural stepper. A natural stepper is someone that can step the worlds without a stepper. Joshua was born on the Long Earth and together with a AI, Lobsang (although he says he's a human!) they journey through the Long Earth's to find out what is out there and how many Long Earth's there are.
Joshua and Lobsang's journey together was definitely my favorite part of the story. As they journey together they find new races and discover how far the Long Earth goes.
There was so much fantastic world building in The Long Earth. Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter introduce new civilisations, and groups of people that go back to basics as they create a new life on new Earths.
The concept, the plot, the characters. It all blew me completely away.
The Long Earth was definitely a five star read for me. My only complaint is that I would've liked more. I can see that this could've been built into a series. Yes, I know that's always my complaint with fantastic books. I always want more.
Even if you're not a fan of science fiction, I recommend The Long Earth. I guarantee it will keep every reader captivated!
