I didn't enjoy this book in the same way I did "Fun Home." It felt to me as if Bechdel was being far more gentle with her icy, withholding mother (who is still alive, which probably has something to do with why she handles her with kid gloves) than she was on her father, a suicide, in her first book. Their relationship is fraught. It's heartbreaking to watch this lovely woman question herself because of all that has been denied her: her mother's touch, her mother's approval, her acceptance. Bechdel has overcome much. I respect that. I got to a point, though, where I was bored with her endless fascination with Freud and D.W. Winnicott. For God's sake, dear woman, those MEN don't have your answers! YOU do.
