Hayley's review
Flotsam by David Wiesner
This wordless picture book tells a story better without words than many picture books with words. Wiesner has a gift of painting in a realistic style but then morphing his paintings to create a surreal story and fantastical images. Without close examination, the reader would not realize that one of the fish was a wind-up gadget. This book allows the reader to imagine what happens under the surface of the sea. There are twists to the plot and humor in the images (i.e. hot air balloon puffer fish). This wordless format allows the reader to be the narrator, while the pictures guide the story. This vintage camera gives a shot by shot account of beautiful and increasingly magical under-sea adventures. The vibrant colors of the sea capture the interest of the reader. Wiesner’s watercolor jumps to life on the page. Readers feel like they are at the beach under the water at the moment they see the images.
