Beth's review
American Wife: A Novel by Curtis Sittenfeld
After my enthusiam for "Prep," this book was a disappointment. The first part of the story -- about the tragic car accident in which Alice (ie. Laura)kills the boy she's in love with, her subsequent withdrawal from life and how Charlie (ie George W) woos and wins her -- is engaging and believable. It helped me understand what Laura may have seen in Bush. But I found the whole march to and through the presidency predictable and dull. In the end, the character of Alice comes across as terribly complacient and cynical, something I truly hope is not true of Laura Bush.
Hi Edie--
I really wanted to go to P & P and hear her speak, but couldn't make it,. I never met her at STA, it was before Jack was there.
Just started "American Wife" and am enjoying it. I'm not picturing Laura Bush as the protagonist, but letting the character develop in her own right.
