I absolutely ADORED this book. Having read Finding Sky by the same author, I had high expectations, and I was not disappointed. A fabulous plot, full of twists and turns.
Phoenix is a thief, working for the Community, a gang of thieves based in London. She is tasked with the stealing of a boy's backpack - namely Yves Benedict, american student. With her powers - as a savant - she means to make a clean steal, but her plan backfires. The electronics in Yves' backpack blow up, burning Phoenix badly.
Back at the headquarters of the Community, the Seer, the ruler of the thieves, does some crazy things to her mind, basically preventing her from drinking or eating until she steals the backpack, not knowing that it has been burnt to cinders already.
Phoenix, with her impossible task, goes to a lecture which Yves is known to be attending to try to steal something from him, thinking she can get away with it. Unfortunately, Yves fights through Phoenix's powers, and catches her. Instead of turning her over to the police, he takes her home to where his brother Xav is, to help her burn. Escaping from the Benedict's flat, Phoenix uncovers a terrible plot to betray Yves' family.
The rest, including a re-appearance of youngest Benedict Zed and his Soulfinder Sky, continues Stirling's tendency to shock in a good way, and ends with a surprising revelation.
A thoroughly entertaining read, and another wonderful book made by a talented author. Obviously 5 stars, what else?
