Airborn is a swashbuckling and immensely satisfying adventure story, set on a Steampunk alternate Earth where lighter-than-air airships cruise the skies.

Matt Cruse, our hero, is a young, capable, and haunted Cabin Boy on the great ship the Aurora. Since his father died, Mr. Cruse can only grasp happiness when he is moving through the air on the ship his father had worked on. His idyllic life is interrupted by a seemingly never-ending series of adventures in this book. He meets a girl, he learns that the mythical and unlikely sky cat creatures might be real, pirates attack, and he is ultimately forced to learn to find happiness without the moving ship he so adores.

I was swept away in this story. I love stories with pirates, flying cats, excellent characterization and careful plotting. Airborn had all of these features and it was an immensely satisfying world to sink into. I will forever associate the smell of mangoes with lighter-than-air hydrium, now...
