The Earth Hums in B-Flat
By Mari Strachan

12 year old Gwenni Morgan doesn’t just dream, she flies in her sleep. She soars up into the night’s sky and listening to the earths hum. Unlike most people in Gwenni’s small welsh town she is quaint, imaginative and bookish Gwenni’s view of the world is different to everyone else’s, for she can see things others can’t. Most people find Gwenni’s odd manor annoying, although a very close neighbour truly loves Gwenni as if one of her own.

She enjoys adventure and discovering mysteries, but when a real big mystery actually happens nobody seems to figure out anything, so Gwenni tries to solve the mysterious looking for clues along the way, she searches where her neighbour went missing, but can’t seem to find anything. What she doesn’t realise is that it will uncover a dark secret.

I love this book and Gwenni’s character because she is so charming and understanding, the way she looks at things is like a new dimension of life. Gwenni has a mind of a child but is growing into a young adult; at home you could say she’s unloved her mother always telling her she was a mistake and calling her names like as odd and Satan. Her sister always makes Gwenni feel bad. The only person that is very fond of Gwenni’s is her father. Her best friend no longer wants to be her best friend, so you can tell her life at home and with friends isn’t easy. But her wonderful and fresh imagination lets her escape from her worries and lets her rise up to the sky and she listens to her favourite sound, the earth’s hum.

This debut novel was incredible and touching. Filled with imagination, originality and adventure this book is an amazing read earning itself 5 stars out of 5! One of the best book’s I’ve ever read.
