Wow. And again, wow. Beautifully written, profound yet accessible. Sagan simplifies the most difficult scientific concepts to a level us "normal" folks can understand, yet he never waters it down or insults our intelligence. The reverence and awe he expresses toward the Cosmos and the complexities of life on our planet cannot but engender the same feelings in us. I did lose interest a bit in the chapters where he focused heavily on the search for life on other planets; while I agree that that's important, I disagree that it's the most important thing for humans to focus on. Also, our edition seems to be missing several graphs and graphics that Sagan refers to in the text of the last two chapters, which made reading those sections frustrating. But the ending brings everything back together beautifully – I want to lock myself in a small room and read Sagan's "creation myth" over and over and over until I really <I>get<i> it – and the overall imp...more
