Fruits Basket by Natsuki Takaya follows the story of Tohru Honda, a Japanese teen who recently lost her mother and home and began living in a tent. When her classmate Yuki Sohma discovers where she’s living and that her tent has been destroyed by a mudslide, he and his cousin let her stay with them. But the Sohma family is cursed; whenever they are hugged by a member of the opposite sex, they are turned into animals from the Chinese zodiac. They eventually turn back to their human form, but they are naked. This of course allows for many humorous situations. While the book has its funny moments, it is a bit dark as there is a mystery surrounding the Sohma family curse. The illustrations are well done and fit the story, including its dark moments, well. Highly recommended.
