really liked it
bookshelves: historical, crime

A beautifully written book that manages to be both surprising and deeply satisfying. Wonderfully compelling characters, set against the dreadful hardships of early-settlement Canada. The story covers a wide sweep, from the brutality with which the Hudson Bay Trading Company conducts its business to the awakening of love in several unexpected quarters.
