This isn't perfect, and I could do an analysis of how problematic some aspects of the story are, but I still think it's a pretty fabulous product. It's one of those books that isn't just meta but also makes you aware of how books are documents, and I love whoever the art director was as much as I love McDonnell. I wrote a paper for my picturebook class asserting that this should have been a Caldecott book.
