I can never decide whether Henning Mankell is a stilted writer or whether the translations are just dreadful. Either way, usually the story is enough to get me past the 'written as a film script' feeling I have towards his books. Sadly this didn't.

Taking place in modern day Sweden, 19thC China, Sweden, China, Sweden, Africa, UK... it was all a bit too much dotting around and swapping between characters for me. The mystery wasnt so much a mystery (more of a thriller) and, as such, I stopped caring about page 300.

As far as Scandinavian Crime Thrillers go, this aint the best...
