If you are a fan of historical novels, you MUST read this book! Ben Kane has added his informed imagination to the historical record to write a believable account of Spartacus' life. The novel opens as he returns from fighting with the Roman legion to find that his father has been deposed from the throne of Thrace. As he finds supporters among old friends, he is found out and sold as a gladiator. The novel ends as he and his wife, a Priestess of Dionysus, and their followers have once again routed the Romans and are heading for The Alps. I found this novel to be compelling in both its scope and research. The novel reads as a factual account of Spartacus' life and it's not until the Author's Note that you realize how much Kane had to imagine. I'm so glad that I won this from a Goodreads giveaway! I've seen the movie, but the book is SO much better.
