King Dinosaur's review
Hallows Eve by Al Sarrantonio
Man, I'm tired of getting burned by horror novelists. I'm a sucker for anything Halloween-related or having to do with autumnal creepiness so once again I plunged into a book with probably expectations that were too high. The thing is, Mr. Sarrantonio is a good writer, but instead of grounding us firmly in the real world he throws us head-first into the maelstrom of his own weird little mythology. I don't know - maybe in the author's mind the image of "squiggles", "smoke-ropes" and "cardboard cutouts" as supernatural creatures seemed utterly terrifying but on the page it just comes off as kind of ridiculous. Too bad. The other annoying thing about this book is that, even though Mr. Sarrantonio seemed to have done a lot of research on All Soul's Day and the origins of Halloween, he still seems under the impression that Samhain is pronounced "Sam - Hane". Oh yeah - and why exactly is Corrie in a wheelchair at age 12? It's never...more
Well, on Halloween proper, I'm going to be the guitarist for The Pretenders - the one who o.d'd on dope and croaked - because my band is portraying Chrissie Hynde and Co. for this year's Night of the Living Tribute Bands (last year we were Fleetwood Mac - yuck! - for the sole purpose of getting our friend, Paul, to dress in drag as Christine McVie and the year before that we were Iggy and the Stooges - yay! - and we kicked much ass). The night after Halloween I'm going to a regular costume party but I haven't decided what I'm going to be. Rest assured it will be something having to do with monsters though. :)
